This case study presents the subject of Pelvic Girdle and Lower Back Pain during pregnancy.
This shares the experience of 28-year old Kate who is pregnant with here first child. She presented a right sacroiliac joint (SIJ) pain at 34 weeks. She was unable to lie on her right side, and was aggravated by pain in rolling over, getting in and out of the car and going up and down stairs.
Prior to this, Kate had a trouble free pregnancy with no previous history of pelvic girdle pain (PGP) or lower back pain (LBP). Aside from a reconstruction on her right knee, she had no other significant medical history. She attended pregnancy exercise classes 3X per week. Her symptoms commenced following a class and were further exacerbated by the next two classes. She ceased attending classes prior to seeking treatment.
Kate demonstrated right SIJ ligamentous laxity and poor pelvic muscle control. Her active straight leg raise (ASLR) test was weak, but improved with external compression applied to her pelvis.
Numerous studies demonstrated the effectiveness of using external compression for pregnancy related PGP. Compression devices provide mechanical support for the pelvis and help stabilise muscles.
Kate decided to use the SRC Pregnancy Leggings as her form of external compression along with clinical pilates based rehabilitation of the muscles around the pelvis.
