Supporting Recovery from Birth Trauma

by SRC Health on Jul 01, 2024

SRC Health is a proud supporter of the Australasian Birth Trauma Association (ABTA) and is thrilled to endorse the Australian Physiotherapy Association’s (APA) newly released Physiotherapy and Birth Trauma position statement. This initiative resonates with this year's International Women's Day theme, 'Count Her In: Invest in Women. Accelerate Progress.' The APA is advocating for governmental support to aid the thousands of Australian parents impacted by birth trauma each year, emphasizing the need for funding critical pre- and post-natal physiotherapy treatments.

Since the inception of SRC Health, our focus has been on developing and delivering solutions that align with the APA's second recommendation which involves investing in non-surgical management of physical birth trauma to enhance health outcomes and reduce healthcare costs associated with injuries and symptoms. These issues include sexual and pelvic pain, incontinence, and pelvic organ prolapse.

Our SRC Recovery range of garments, is evidence based, endorsed by the APA and is specifically designed to address immediate birth trauma (up to 12 months postpartum) in a non-surgical manner:

  • abdominal muscle separation ,
  • perineal tears and stitches,
  • C-section wounds, sciatica, and
  • low back pain.

These health issues, if left unaddressed, may lead to more serious and prolonged conditions.

The SRC Restore shorts offer a revolutionary, non-invasive solution for:

  • light to moderate stress urinary incontinence and/or
  • mild to moderate bladder and uterine prolapse.

The garments in the entire SRC compression range are engineered to support parts of the body affected by birth trauma. By enhancing comfort and providing necessary support, the SRC range can help new mothers feel more secure and comfortable during their pregnancy and postpartum recovery journey. This aligns with the APA's focus on effective postpartum care, ensuring that women receive the support they need during this crucial period.

Investing in the well-being of mothers postpartum is about laying the foundation for long-term health and quality of life. The efforts by ABTA, APA and brands like SRC Health highlight the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to address the complex issue of birth trauma. It underscores the need for continued advocacy, research, and innovation in this field.

SRC Health is committed to supporting women's recovery from birth trauma through our innovative product range. We stand with the APA in calling for increased investment in non-surgical management options that can make a difference in the lives of new mothers.

While government funding for critical pre- and post-natal physiotherapy treatment may take time due to bureaucratic processes and budget constraints, it's important for those with health insurance to utilize their coverage. Unfortunately, those without insurance or with inadequate coverage may face challenges, as some health funds do not cover items like SRC compression garments under orthosis/aids and appliances. However, those who are covered should take advantage of their physiotherapy extras cover and seek a refund for a portion of their SRC garments to ensure they receive the support they need during their recovery journey.
